Quad and beach buggy Insurance in Spain.

With lots of sun, sand and wide open roads leading to the interior of the country and in to hideaways, there are lots of opportunities to use quads and beach buggies on rough terrain, into the forests and away from the usual tracks and valleys, along riverbeds and into areas rarely accessible by a conventional car or 4x4.

This amazing opportunity to drive free into areas of natural beauty and see sights not normally accessible is now being hampered by Local Insurance Companies. Spanish insurance companies seem to be reducing the availability of insurances for Quads and buggies in Spain. Most of the buggies we do insure have a full roll cage protecting the user, so that in the event of an accident such as rolling over, the driver and occupants are protected. So why are the insurance companies getting nervous about insuring these vehicles?

They are considerably more expensive to buy in Spain. Which is probably why many Expats prefer to buy one in the UK and bring it into Spain and re-register it here.

You have the choice of buying it in the UK, registering, taxing and insuring it in the UK, then shipping it over to Spain. Unfortunately none of the Insurance Companies in Spain are interested in insuring these vehicles on the VIN number. (This is the chassis number of the vehicle).

If we could insure this type of vehicle on the VIN number then Expats could bring the vehicles directly to Spain and do a direct import. This would save, road tax, insurance and registration fees in the UK. You would still need to pat the import duty, about 14% of the vehicle value, road tax, Pre ITV engineering inspection (an MOT type inspection which checks the certificate of conformity within Europe called a COC certificate) and Gestor-Lawyer’s fees for doing the transfer documentation. The vehicle will then need to be taken to the ITV station to have the actual vehicle inspection done.

Its all a bit of a nuisance but will save you money - just make the comparison on websites and check out the exorbitant prices for new vehicles in Spain. The second hand market is not much better. Second hand vehicles in Spain command a higher premium than in most parts of Europe, as there is very little in the way of moisture, salt and other things that cause vehicles to rust.
