Travel Insurance in Spain - what to look for!
As the song says “All my bags are packed and I´m ready to go”, but have you taken out your travel insurance? The world of travel has changed dramatically over the past 5 years and whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, travel insurance is considered an absolute essential for any form of travel.
What should you look for in a policy?
Good medical expenses and repatriation cover. Whilst the EHIC European Health Insurance Card will cover you in Europe for emergency treatment it won’t cover repatriation. If you have an unexpected accident or are taken ill and need an air ambulance with staff to get you home, could you afford to pay the thousands of Euros it would cost, and what about the cost of hotels and flights for your family or others that might be travelling with you?
When you buy travel insurance, for Europe or Worldwide, do make sure that you advise your insurer of any pre-existing medical conditions. It will be worth it, if you do have to claim on your travel insurance and you have failed to mention something that you may later come to rely on, tell the truth, so that you don’t get problems later. You wouldn’t want to end up in the news as someone the insurance company rejected, or be stressing out over how you will pay your medical bills because you didn’t think telling them about your pre-existing medical condition would matter – it does!
Schedule Airline Failure.
in the current climate with airlines either going bust or making changes to their routes at short notice, it is important to have this cover. Yes, you can make a claim against the airline for your lost flights, but what about the cost of the hotel, the tourist trips you’ve booked, coach or train travel, it will all add up, so why should you lose out when it isn’t your fault.
Baggage.
Bags go missing or get damaged all the time whilst in transit. Ensure that your travel insurance policy will cover a payment for emergency clothing/toiletries if your bag is lost. It could be a few days before you are reunited with your baggage, if at all.
Valuables.
Can all be covered in a travel insurance policy but don’t let them out of your sight. Keep valuables with you at all times whilst travelling. If you decide to check in your hand luggage with the valuables inside and they mysteriously go missing during transit, the airline will tell you to claim on your travel insurance and your travel insurance will tell you that they are not covered as they were out of your sight. Make sure you read the terms and conditions.
Personal Accident Cover.
None of us are ever going to have an accident whilst on holiday, are we! You might not plan it, but there will be an occasion when it may well happen to you. Your Travel insurance policy in Spain will pay you out if you are left disabled or lose a limb and it will also pay out on cover in the event of your death.
Winter Sports.
Ski Insurance as part of a travel policy will be cheaper than 2 stand alone insurance policies. In addition to the cover in the general policy, you will be covered for accidents on the slopes, ski equipment whether owned or hired, lift passes and even visiting a different resort if the slopes in your resort are closed.
If you choose NOT to read the terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy, or the Schedule of insurance, then you won’t know what is covered, what you might be able to claim for, or the relevant values of each type of cover. ALWAYS read the documents you are sent, it could be the difference between life and death.
