The Social Security system in Spain will only pay for extractions if they are considered necessary. Children may be exempt from Dental charges in Spain for most treatments.

Dentists in Spain are considerably cheaper than in the UK, unless you decide to visit an Expat Dental practitioner in Spain where you will be paying higher than local prices for private dental treatment. 

FREE REGULAR DENTAL CHECK-UPS IN SPAIN.

Some local Dentists will and do offer a free annual dental check-up and you may be able to find out which ones do provide this service by going to your Local Town Hall and asking. They are generally very helpful. 

EMERGENCY DENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT IN SPAIN.

If you have a severe tooth ache and you think that the tooth will require removing then the Local Social Security Dentist will do that for you free of charge as long as you can provide documentation or a SIP card. 

EHIC DENTAL TREATMENT.

Your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) does not cover you for any dental treatment unless it is an emergency and that treatment will be restricted to “patching you up” until you can back to your home country and then you can get the treatment you need. Anything else and you will have to pay privately to get dental treatment in Spain.

GOING TO A DENTIST IN SPAIN.

Once you have found a Dentist or Dental Clinic, you will need to provide Identification on arrival. Have a look around the practice and see if they are registered with the Consejo Dentista (Council of Dentists) and check to make sure you are comfortable with the cleanliness of the dental practice. Recommendations from friends can also be helpful in locating a good dentist in Spain. 

You can often make dental appointments online or via and app if the Dentist has one. Initial consultations and teeth inspections may be offered free of charge and children between the age of 6 and 15 as they are eligible for free treatment if you have registered with the local healthcare centre and you have a Spanish Health Card.

Some Dentists may ask for payments up front if you have not used them before.

Emergency dental treatment in Spain should be free of charge and if you do have a dental problem, go to the nearest hospital or local health centre who will have a dentist provide the emergency treatment.

Most Private Dental Health Care Insurance plans and policies in Spain offer supplements for dental care and some will offer stand=alone dental insurance plans. Premiums for the stand -alone plans can vary from €6 to €25 a month, depending on the type of dental insurance cover you want. 

Private dental plans use a network of specified dentists. If you have a preferred dentist that you want to use, check that they are on the list of Dentists covered under your policy. The dental Health Plans can give you free check-ups, fillings, extractions, may include X-rays and cleaning every six to twelve months.
